Hi there. Was very interested in your post (Tarot for yourself - chapter 1 part 2 posted on 16th May). I did the personality card, which came out as the moon. I was born on the 7th July and that makes my ruling planet....the moon!

Another thing I discovered is that each major card is associated with the following year. This year for me would be the Hermit, which was also, I might add, my soul card. Next year will be card number 10, the wheel of fortune and so on, working through the deck in order, one card a year. This begs the question, does it take 22 years to complete each cycle of our lives? 0 - 22 finding out who we are and what path we want to take in life. 22 - 44 we are on another cycle, work, family etc - another learning curve and so on.

I like the idea of sleeping with the cards, too. It's something I've heard of, but not yet done. I think I'm going to try it with my Haindl deck, which seems like an appropriate deck to for dreaming & sleep. Thanks for the comment!

I think "cleansing" for me is psychological. It has more to do with how I feel about the cards than what energy state they might be in. The idea of sleeping with them under my pillow appeals a lot. What I do right now is just a sort of affirmation type cleansing before I use them.

I love the Osho deck! It is one of my traveling companions - perfect for connecting in joyful ways in many languages, with many cultures. The imagery and messages always seem to be just what is needed to be heard. A classic!

This is a very interesting analysis; I hadn't thought of the difference in quite this way before, but I absolutely see what you're saying. I suppose the occult scholar in me prefers the symbolic richness of more esoteric decks, while the art lover in me enjoys nothing more than a good visual narrative. I think in the end it depends on the kind of reading desired; narrative cards are great for more practical, real-world, and interpersonal concerns, while symbolic/esoteric cards are probably better for readings dealing with philosophical, spiritual, and metaphysical issues.

I wouldn't say one is strictly better than the other (though one could argue that some symbolic decks are more "pure" tarot while storytelling decks are more like problem-solving flashcards); both certainly have their place, depending on what the reader hopes to gain from them. As with any study as radically subjective as tarot, it really all comes down to what works best for the individual's particular needs.

For some reason, I've never found the Death card to be scary, even before I knew much about tarot, and I'd be more inclined to call the Three of Swords a "difficult" card than a scary one. I'm a little weird about things like this, though. :)

Other cards I would call difficult are the Moon, Judgement, the Queen of Swords, the Nine of Swords, and all the Sevens. The best explanation I've found for the problem of the Sevens is the Qabalistic one (low and unbalanced on the Tree of Life), but the Qabalistic approach to tarot is something I'm really just getting into and don't feel nearly qualified enough yet to expound upon.

I totally agree--this card gives me an energetic charge, a feeling that I am about to break through to something new.

I'm thinking of doing a whole series on "scary" cards, such as The Devil, Death, Three of Swords, etc. Are there any other cards you think of as "scary"? I'd be curious what cards other people fear.

I like that take on it! It's funny how we emphasized differently in the readings--I love how fluid and flexible tarot can be.
